Viewing area and overall size
A broad frame occupies part of a mirror’s overall dimensions, so compare the reflective area as well as its outer width and height. For dressing, consider the view you need and where you can stand to use it. For a mirror above furniture, the whole composition may matter as much as the viewing area.
Shape changes the relationship with the wall. A tall outline draws attention vertically; a wider one can relate to furniture below it. Curves and angular outlines create different contrasts with nearby doors, cabinets and other straight edges.
Frame and edge character
A substantial frame can make the mirror read as a decorative object in its own right. A finer edge gives more emphasis to the reflected view. Compare the frame’s tone, profile and visible depth with the furniture around it rather than choosing only by reflective size.
Detail can connect separate pieces without matching them exactly. A repeated curve or material tone may be enough, particularly where the mirror sits above furniture with a strong front pattern or distinctive base.
Placement and the view it reflects
A mirror reflects the objects, openings and light in front of it. Consider that view from the places where people normally sit or stand, not only while looking directly at the mirror. A position that reflects a window creates a different composition from one facing a busy storage area.
When comparing wall mirrors and floor-positioned designs, account for the intended support arrangement and the space needed to use them. Follow the selected product’s mounting or standing instructions; a tall shape alone does not establish that a mirror can safely lean against a wall.
Combining a mirror with furniture
Above a console table, consider the combined height and width of the table, mirror and any objects on the surface. Leave visible space around the arrangement so the wall does not feel crowded.
With dressers and chests, balance the mirror with the top you still need to use and the position from which you will look into it. Check dimensions, frame details and included components on the mirror’s product page before ordering.
