Melamine-Faced Board
A decorative face with a separate board core
Melamine-Faced Board has a resin-bonded decorative facing on an engineered board. The facing provides the visible colour or pattern; the core provides the body of the panel.
Sheen Interiors supplies options with MDF or particleboard cores. Particleboard, also called chipboard, is a different board type from MDF. Selecting the decorative face is therefore only one part of choosing the panel.
MDF or particleboard core?
MDF core
MDF is made from wood fibres and binder, giving it a relatively uniform structure. Read the MDF material guide for more about the board itself, then establish the specification of the chosen faced panel.
Particleboard or chipboard core
Particleboard is made from bonded wood particles. Its decorative face can look similar to one applied to MDF, while the underlying board is different. Thickness, support and fixings need to suit the selected panel and its intended use.
Colours and patterns at the scale of the surface
The range includes colours and patterns selected according to the project requirements. A plain colour lets the shape of the furniture take prominence; a patterned face brings its own scale and direction to the design.
For a patterned selection, judge how much of the design will appear on the finished face and how its repeat will read across a wider area. A wood-patterned decor is different from real wood veneer: explore Natural Walnut Veneer if natural grain variation is part of your preference.
Matte, gloss and high gloss
Matte, gloss and high-gloss options are available in the melamine-faced range. Matte gives a more subdued reflection, while gloss and high gloss bring reflected light and surroundings more strongly into view.
Choose the colour or pattern together with the sheen. A small sample can show the decor, but its reflection also matters on a larger face.
Choosing the complete panel for furniture and fitted storage
Edges in view
On cabinet fronts, shelving and furniture panels, an edge can be as visible as the face. Consider its colour and the junction between the two, including what will be seen from the side or when a door is open.
Expected use
Regular handling and cleaning, shelf loads and moisture exposure affect selection of the complete panel. The decorative face does not make the core or its joints waterproof. Explore Custom Woodwork & Joinery to develop the furniture or fitted-storage commission.
Cleaning the face and protecting the edges
Clean with a soft, non-abrasive cloth and products appropriate to the selected surface. For everyday use:
- Remove spills promptly, particularly around joints and cut-outs.
- Protect the face from hot objects rather than placing them directly on it.
- Use a protective board for cutting and avoid abrasive pads that can alter the surface.
