Engineered Wood & Boards

MDF

MDF, or medium-density fibreboard, is an engineered board made from wood fibres held together with a binder. Its relatively uniform structure and smooth face provide a foundation for painted and veneered surfaces.

Select the board grade for the conditions in which it will be used, then choose the visible surface. The same underlying material can form a plain-coloured furniture face or support the natural grain of a wood veneer.

Standard, MR or FR MDF?

GradeSelection purposeImportant limit
Standard MDFFurniture and interior components in appropriate dry conditions.Choose another grade where the application requires additional moisture or fire performance.
Moisture-resistant MDF (MR)Increased moisture resistance where the intended use calls for it.MR is not waterproof; persistent wetting still needs to be avoided.
Fire-retardant MDF (FR)Applications with specified fire-performance requirements. The required classification must be established for the specified board and finished construction.

MR and FR address different requirements. For an FR application, the board specification, thickness, finish and tested configuration must be compatible with the project requirement. A finish does not automatically retain the board’s fire classification.

Painted or veneered MDF

Painted surfaces

Paint gives MDF the required colour without a natural wood-grain pattern. Consider how that colour will sit beside the other materials in the room, particularly where a large front or panel becomes a prominent surface.

Natural veneer

A real wood veneer adds natural grain over the MDF support. The visible wood and its arrangement become a separate selection: explore Natural Walnut Veneer for its cut, matching and finish choices.

Matte to mirror-like reflection

Applied finishes include matte, gloss and high gloss, with high-gloss finishing available for standard, MR and FR MDF. Matte gives a quieter reflection; high gloss can create a mirror-like appearance that makes surrounding light more visible. Colour and sheen should be considered together on the intended surface.

For a decorative faced-panel option, explore Melamine-Faced Board, where the facing and core are selected separately.

Selecting MDF for the way a piece will be used

Visible faces

Cabinet fronts and interior panels differ in how often they are touched or cleaned. Select their surface and edge details with that contact in mind, alongside the moisture and heat exposure of the intended position.

Supported components

For shelves and furniture components, the expected load, span, supports and fixings help determine the board specification. Explore Custom Woodwork & Joinery for commissioned furniture and fitted work.

Caring for a finished MDF surface

The finished surface

Use a soft cloth and cleaning products suited to the paint, veneer or facing. Remove spills promptly and avoid soaking or abrasive cleaning. Follow the care guidance for the selected finish before applying polish or another maintenance treatment.

Edges and damage

Keep moisture from remaining at joints or exposed edges. If damage exposes or changes the board beneath the surface, have it assessed before refinishing; another coat of paint alone may not address the underlying damage.
