Modified Clay Material (MCM)
MCM: a textured covering over a supporting surface
Modified Clay Material, or MCM, is a manufactured mineral-based covering supplied by PHOMI. Its textures include stone-like effects, giving a surface relief and character without making it a piece of quarried stone.
The covering can follow suitable forms, while the material beneath it establishes the supporting construction. Choose the texture for the visible result and the complete build-up for the intended use.
Reading texture across walls and façades
Interior walls
At close range, the depth and direction of the texture become prominent. Consider whether the wall should provide a quiet background or a stronger surface feature, and how the pattern repeats across its width. Side lighting can make relief more pronounced.
Exterior walls and façades
On a façade, texture is read across a larger area and from farther away. Pattern scale, orientation and the arrangement of visible joints influence the overall appearance. The selected covering and backing system also need to suit the exterior exposure.
Covering a table base: MCM over steel or MDF
For table bases, MCM is used as a decorative covering over Mild Steel or MDF. The underlying construction provides the form and support; MCM provides the visible texture.

Water exposure and fire requirements
Water exposure
Assess the selected MCM covering together with its backing and the surrounding edges and junctions. Water resistance at the face does not make a wall or furniture base waterproof: moisture reaching the substrate can still affect the complete piece.
Fire requirements
Where fire performance is specified, use documentation for the selected material and its intended system. A material’s reaction-to-fire classification describes how it behaves when exposed to fire; it is different from the fire resistance of a complete wall assembly. Match the evidence to the project requirement.
Caring for a textured MCM surface
Remove dust and dirt from the relief using a method suited to the selected texture and finish. Follow the product’s cleaning guidance before applying stronger chemicals, abrasive tools or pressure washing.
If the covering is damaged or an edge lifts, have the covering and backing assessed before refinishing. Surface treatment alone may not address the cause beneath it.
