Mild Steel
Mild steel in visible and concealed roles
Mild steel is a low-carbon steel used in furniture and interior work, both as a visible element and beneath other materials. Its role may be expressed through a finished frame or concealed within the piece.
The name describes a material category rather than one exact grade or load capacity. The intended use and the selected finish help define what is needed from the steel.
A visible frame or reinforcement behind the surface
Steel that remains visible
Furniture bases, frames and decorative interior elements can make the steel part of the design. A painted frame can create a clear outline against another material, while its colour and sheen determine whether it blends into the setting or stands apart.
Reinforcement behind another material
Mild steel can provide concealed reinforcement for marble or wood tables, consoles and TV walls. The wood or stone remains the visible surface while the steel contributes support within the construction.
The reinforcement needed depends on the complete design and the loads it must carry. Its presence alone does not establish how thin a tabletop can be or how far it can extend.
Colour, sheen and protection on mild steel
Paint, enamel and powder coating offer ways to give mild steel a finished colour and surface. Consider colour and sheen together: a low-sheen dark frame reads differently from the same form with a glossy surface.
Appearance and protection
The visible colour is only one part of the finish choice. The coating must also be appropriate to the conditions the steel will encounter. Brushing or polishing changes the metal’s texture or reflection, but does not make mild steel stainless or remove its need for suitable protection.
Exposure and care for coated steel
Before choosing the material
Moisture can promote rust where mild steel is exposed. Protection matters for concealed reinforcement as well as visible frames, particularly where dampness could remain unnoticed.
If you want an exposed metallic surface rather than an opaque coating, compare Stainless Steel and its grade choices. For the design and making of the metalwork, see Metalwork Fabrication.
Looking after coated steel
Use a soft cloth and a cleaner compatible with the selected coating. Remove spills and avoid abrasive cleaning that could damage the surface.
Have chips, exposed steel or rust assessed before refinishing. Applying another colour coat may conceal the mark without addressing the loss of protection beneath it.
