Meranti Wood
Meranti Wood: light red and dark red
Sheen Interiors offers both light red and dark red Meranti. The choice starts with the wood’s natural colour, then takes in its grain, texture and the effect of the finished surface.
These are timber groups rather than stain colours. Each includes natural variation, so the name sets a colour direction rather than an exact shade.
Comparing light red and dark red Meranti
Light red Meranti
Light red Meranti generally ranges from pinkish tones to light red or light brown. It is useful to consider when you want a warmer wood colour without making a large visible surface too dark.
Dark red Meranti
Dark red Meranti generally has a deeper red to red-brown appearance. That richer colour can give an exposed face more visual weight. The group name does not mean every piece has the same depth of colour.
Colour ranges can overlap. Compare the actual wood rather than using light and dark as a ranking of quality or performance.
Grain and texture beyond colour
Grain direction
Meranti commonly has interlocked grain, where the direction changes within the wood. Depending on the cut, this can introduce changing bands of light and dark across the face. A uniform ribbon pattern is not a feature of every piece.
Surface texture
The texture is generally moderately coarse and even. This is a different quality from the depth of its red or brown colour: two similarly coloured pieces can still read differently through their grain and the way the surface is finished.
Meranti in furniture and fitted work
For furniture and joinery, consider how much Meranti will remain exposed. A broad face makes the colour group a stronger part of the room; smaller framing components introduce it in narrower lines.
Colour alone does not establish whether a construction suits its intended use. The chosen timber, component dimensions and support need to be considered together. Explore Custom Woodwork & Joinery for commissioning furniture and fitted work.
Colour and surface after finishing
Keep the natural timber group separate from the applied colour. A darker finish on light red Meranti does not turn it into dark red Meranti.
Finishing can change the apparent depth of colour, the sheen and how much surface texture remains visible. Consider whether the wood should retain an evident grain or have a more uniform surface appearance. An example of the proposed finish on the selected Meranti is more useful than a colour swatch alone.
Movement, moisture and care
Allowing for natural movement
Meranti, like other solid wood, expands or contracts as its moisture content changes. The finished item needs to accommodate that movement. Avoid concentrated heat and persistent damp rather than relying on a surface coating to keep the wood unchanged.
Caring for the finish
Dust with a soft cloth, remove spills promptly and protect the surface from hot objects or standing water. Choose cleaners and maintenance products for the actual finish. A natural wood colour does not tell you whether a surface needs oil, polish or another treatment.
